Successful People Have Unique Style
“Muscle memory is what it’s all about.” Lee Trevino
Recently I read an article about golfer, Lee Trevino, in Golf Digest.
I didn’t become a fan of Lee’s until he was well into his later years on the PGA Tour and PGA Senior (now The Champions) Tour.
I always found Lee exciting and fun to watch even if he couldn’t quite do all the same things he did when he was winning majors.
Lee’s nickname was the Merry Mex. He always had a smile on his face and always entertained the crowds at the tour events.
It’s a delight to watch people enjoy what they’re doing. Their excitement and joy can infect the crowd and for a few hours people enjoy themselves.
Lee had that charisma.
What he also had was a unique playing style that allowed him to win some of the biggest tournaments in golf.
Unique (Homegrown) Swing Style
Trevino had one of the most unique swings in the game. He came from an era when the best golfers taught themselves how to play the game.
Great players like Palmer, Trevino, Ballesteros, Hogan, etc. all had swings that were self taught through many years of work and passion.
These players had the ability to craft shots that nobody else could. They could hit draws, fades, low balls, spinners, and many more.
These players were scrappy and confident in their chosen craft – golf. They were confident because they had put in the time to become the best at what they did.
Lee Trevino once brought a rubber snake to the opening hole of the US Open Monday playoff with Jack Nicklaus as a joke. He wanted to loosen up the crowd. This took some guts and confidence. Jack is a pretty easy going guy, but on the course he is one fierce competitor.
Trevino is also a great competitor, but his confidence in his ability to play golf allows him to joke around a little bit knowing that he can still focus when it counts – hitting the shot.
Trevino’s unique golfing style gives him confidence to hit any shot that the most challenging situations ask for. He’s confident because he is self-taught. He practices and uses his own creativity to create ways to hit every shot necessary.
“I got my confidence from hard work.”
Trevino’s unique style allowed him to win 6 major championships – golf’s Super Bowls.
Not many people have the patience and passion to take the time to practice and hone their craft to create their own unique style.
But you can.
Finding your unique style
Having a unique style for you and your hunting business on the Web is vital to standing out today. There is so much noise on the Web that it’s difficult for businesses to create signal and gain the valuable attention of quality followers.
Like Lee Trevino, every blogger and Web entrepreneur needs to learn how to find success in their own way. Use the help of others, but use it to hone your own style.
To create signal, you’ll have to create a voice and a presence on the Web that is unique. Other people are drawn to characters.
Lee Trevino is a character. People were drawn to his presence on the course. Plus he was successful at his craft. People were drawn to him as a person and drawn to him as a golfer. This is a special trait and one that successful people have.
Trevino spent many countless hours practicing and experimenting with his golf swing. He taught himself through trial and error how to hit every shot he would need to become as successful as he could.
You’ll need to use the same trial and error approach to learn how to be successful on the Web.
A great example of trial and error with blogging is this video interview with Cory Glauner at Base Camp Legends. Cory explains how his blogging topics have evolved to gain more traffic and exposure.
It takes trial and error (mostly error) to find what works and what gains attention.
Don’t be afraid to try something and fail. By trying new things you’ll be taking chances that your competitors have been unwilling to take.
Take some chances. Develop your own unique blogging and Website style. Take advice when it’s offered. Seek the help of other successful Web entrepreneurs – most are willing to help. Visit their sites and see which of their posts are most popular and study why they are popular.
Then work to hone your own unique style so that you can stand out on the Web.
And practice your craft enough until it becomes physical and mental memory.
