One of my favorite movies is Tin Cup with Kevin Costner and Rene Russo. If you’re not familiar with the movie here is a short overview: Roy McAvoy (Kevin Costner) is a thirty-something failed pro golfer who lives in a Winnebago parked next to his barely operational driving range in West Texas. He spends his days drinking beer, hitting golf balls, making bets with his buddies, and giving the occasional golf lesson. While Roy still has all of the physical golf capabilities of the best golfers in the world, he lacks the mental understanding of risk-reward.

One of the things I struggle with frequently is focusing on what’s important to reaching my goals in life. It seems like I get into situations where I’m spending way too much time on tasks that aren’t as important as others. For example, just before I sat down to write this post I was working on some changes for the Hunting Business Marketing site. Most of these changes were functional and somewhat visual. After struggling for awhile to figure them out I realized that I was wasting valuable time that I had meant to use for writing. I’ve always been inquisitive and while I find that characteristic to be a positive quality it also has the tendency to get me in trouble once and awhile concerning time management.

I remember seeing an interview with Quincy Jones, Michael’s producer on Thriller and other albums, where he commented to Michael, before the release of Thriller, that he thought the intro to Billie Jean was too long. Jones said that Michael told him he was going to leave it as it was because the intro groove simply made him feel like dancing. Jones replied, “When Michael Jackson tells you that a groove makes him feel like dancing, you leave the song alone.”

I was thinking about how small hunting businesses could break into the hunting industry and it struck me that one of the best ways for small hunting companies to stand-out on the Web was to take advantage of the biggest resource on the Web – hunting bloggers. There are many great hunting bloggers on the Web and it seems like they are being neglected by the bigger companies in the hunting industry. And I’m not sure exactly why.

There is so much noise on the Web that it’s difficult to get your Website and content noticed. I remember just a year or two ago there were only a few basic hunting Websites that offered things such as photos, forums, and a few had blogs. Today, there are more hunting social networking sites than a person can count.

If you’ve read one or two posts on this blog before you have probably figured out that I am a big country music fan. I often compare the careers of country music singers and songs to the marketing of hunting businesses. This may seem odd, but if you look past the obvious there can be some real intriguing things to learn from country music as it relates to the marketing of your hunting business.

I prefer to think of Robin Hood as a patriot of the individual. He robbed the political elite to give back that which was originally stolen from the individuals of a society. It’s the political tyrants, kings, and monarchs who steal through taxes, fees, inflation (debasement of coins or notes), and other methods of capital consumption.

I’ve never been a fan of involuntary music, sound or video playing when I open a new Web page. It doesn’t bother me as much when I’m at home, but it does bother me when I’m at my day job and I don’t have volume control…even though I have my own office. It still makes things uncomfortable. I can’t imagine how it makes those in cubicles or shared offices feel.
