The following are examples of hunting businesses that exhibit the model of a successful venture. These businesses change, adapt and embrace new technology, new strategies, and new ideas that add value to their current and future customers.

Hopefully you can pick up a few aspects of these businesses that you can use to continue to make your business amazing.

These are in no particular order.

Field & Stream

Field and Stream Magazine

Website: FieldandStream.com

Field & Stream Brief

Field & Stream Magazine was founded in 1899. Since that time it has provided some of the best fishing and hunting advice and stories. The writers and photographers are the best of the best in the outdoor world.

As the time has passed and technologies such as the Web have come about, Field & Stream has adapted, changed, and improved its business to provide the best of the best for its followers.

Why they get it

Some notable print publications have struggled to change their businesses to meet the demands of Web savvy readers. The lag of these businesses to change and adapt gave room for new businesses to emerge and satisfy customers.

For example, Digg has taken the place of news sources on the Web such as The New York Times and the USA Today.

Field & Stream has always had a collection of amazing writer and photographers. Its website continues this tradition.

The site is full of the same great content you can expect from the print version of Field & Stream. Along with this great content is added content such as an archived photo gallery, expert blogs, tips, and huge archives of all the information you can possibly want to meet your outdoor demands.

Field & Stream has a great e-newsletter (left-hand column about halfway down the Home page) that, as a hunter, I always find myself opening to see what is happening in the outdoor world.

Deer & Deer Hunting

Deer & Deer Hunting in Brief

Deer & Deer Hunting Magazine was founded in 1977. The magazine grew steadily as the world’s best whitetail experts compiled the most useful whitetail research and information in history. Skilled writers and photographers continue to bring this knowledge and research to whitetail enthusiasts everywhere.

Why they get it

Deer & Deer Hunting has made the transition from print to Web. Now the company is succeeding in both channels of connection with its followers.

On the Web, readers can enjoy the same content as in the magazine. My personal favorite has always been the Deer Hunting Tactics section. Please notice that each section has an RSS feed; very handy for those (like me!) who use RSS every day.

Along with forums, blogs, a newsletter (right under the logo on the Home page), and other resources is my favorite aspect of the Deer & Deer Hunting business:

Online Video

There are so many videos here that I have literally spent entire afternoons watching (and learning) everything you can imagine that has to do with deer hunting.

Take a look for yourself, but be careful…it’s addictive.

Got Hunts

Outdoors International

Got Hunts in Brief

Got Hunts (Outdoors International) is in the business of connecting. They work hard to connect outfitters with hunters. The look and feel of the site is great. The features all have benefits for users and the use of current technology such as RSS is used effectively.

There is an excellent blog including news updates, e-newsletter (right side), videos, photos, and more.

My favorite part of what the great people at Outdoors International do is their involvement with Twitter.

HuntingNet

HuntingNet is the original Website for hunting enthusiasts. Founded in 1995, HuntingNet has grown into the Internet’s largest hunting Website. There is literally anything and everything you can imagine as it relates to hunting.

Why they get it

Since 1995, HuntingNet has been The source for everything hunting. The site has articles, videos, a gear directory, plus many more resources for hunting maniacs.

I can’t imagine what the site looked like in 1995 (Here’s what it looked like in 2000). That’s pretty good for 2000.

That being said, HuntingNet today, is the best resource on the Web for hunters. I frequent the forums year-round trying to improve my knowledge of hunting.

The journals are excellent. The videos are great and very impressive. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and great at writing (and hunting of course!). I absolutely LOVE the Trophy Gallery.

Quite frankly, HuntingNet is the best.

HuntingNet has obviously embraced change throughout the years and continues to provide the most valuable resource for hunting enthusiasts on the Web.

Why they get it

One thing the team at 3 Rivers does well is using available technology to improve their customers’ experience. There is a full library of instructional videos as well as many other videos relating to traditional archery.

The Video Gallery

The team at 3 Rivers has a great website that makes it easy and safe for customers to make their traditional archery purchases. They have an email newsletter as well as occasional promotions. The business puts out a great looking catalog.

Traditional business best practices along with the willingness to improve and change make 3 Rivers Archery of the businesses that currently get it in the hunting industry.

So do you have any examples of other hunting businesses that get it?
